If You Can't Be With The One You Love
She placed her elbow on the car door and rested her chin on her hand.
Sighing deeply she closed her eyes.
"We'll be there in no time," she heard a voice coming from the driver's
seat.
Why he picked Chicago for their honeymoon, she didn't know. They had
been in the car for hours and her backside was getting numb. She
shifted her weight and looked forward at the stream of headlights coming
towards them.
Some honeymoon--hours in a car--hours after the
"I do's" had been said.
A bride doesn't usually have to wait so long for the wedding night.
'That's what you get for not waiting till the wedding night,' she
chastised herself, silently.
'If you hadn't, he would have stopped at the first motel he had passed."
She looked over at her husband and he turned to smile at her.
"fifteen more minutes. I swear, and we'll be there."
She nodded her head. She just wanted out of this car. If she would be
honest with herself it wasn't the long car ride that was bothering her,
nor the fact that her new husband didn't seem to be in any hurry to
consummate their marriage. Her real problem was back in River Run, and
she was wondering what he was doing. He hadn't been there to see them
off. Part of her wanted to think he was pining away for her, but she
knew better. Also absent from the crowd gathered to wish them well as
they left, was Ginger.
"You're being silly," she whispered.
"Hmmm?" Hank asked as he turned to look at her.
She forced a smile. "Oh nothing. What sounds good for supper?"
"Well, I'm hungry, but not for food," Hank replied as he took Sarah's
hand.
"Hank, we have to eat."
"We can have something brought up to the room."
"Oh no we can't. I won't have someone bring food up to the room, knowing
what we've been doing," Sarah replied, aghast.
"Awww, Sarah, we're on our honeymoon. You're in your wedding dress.
People are gonna know what we'll be doing."
"Oh, Hank. What would your mother say?"
Hank let go of her hand and draped his arm across the steering wheel.
They drove the rest of the way in silence.
Hank stopped the car in front of the Blackstone and the doorman opened
Sarah's door for her.
She took his hand and stepped out of the car. Her mouth dropped open as
she looked up at the hotel in front of her. Hank walked around the car
and took her hand and led her into the marble floored foyer.
"Oh Hank, it's beautiful," she sighed.
"Nothing but the best for my wife," he smiled down at her.
"But Hank, it has to be expensive. We can't....."
"Yes we can. I've got connections. The family of an old Army buddy of
mine, owns this place. We have our room for five whole days and it
won't cost us a penny."
"But that's charity," she frowned.
"No it's a gift. I saved his life and he wanted to do this for me. I
wanted to surprise you."
"Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf?" a tall, dark haired young
man asked.
"Yes," Hank answered.
"Welcome to the Blackstone, we've been expecting you. I'm Herbert and if
you'll follow me, I'll show you to your room."
~~
Hank handed Herbert a couple of bills and thanked him, before he scooped
Sarah up in his arms and carried her into the room.
She giggled as he put her down. "Oh, I can't believe this," she
uttered.
"I can't believe we're finally married," he said as he placed his
forehead against hers and smiled.
"Sarah, you don't know how long I've waited for this moment and you
don't know how many times that I didn't think I would survive to see
it."
Her eyes fluttered at his heart felt words, before he tilted her chin
and kissed her softly, lingering just long enough to make her sigh when
their lips parted.
"So, do you want to eat first......." Hank asked as
he raised an eyebrow
and smiled mischievously.
"I don't think I'm hungry for food," she answered softly.
"Good," he uttered as he began to take his jacket off.
Sarah tugged at his tie, trying to loosen it. When she did she pulled it
over his head and then fumbled with the buttons on his shirt. They both
yanked it down over his shoulders where it got caught at his wrists.
They both tugged until the fabric pulled loose, causing them both to
laugh.
They didn't find the buttons on her dress as humorous. Hank silently
cursed the person who put so many tiny buttons down the back of it. It
certainly wasn't a dress to get out of in a hurry.
Once their clothing was shed he pulled her body close to his and
reclaimed her lips. He slowly backed her towards the bed and gently
lifted her body onto the mattress, where he laid down also. He ran his
fingers down her arms to her hands where their fingers laced together,
before he raised them over her head and began to trail kisses down her
neck......
~~~
Sarah carefully raised Hank's arm and slid out from underneath it. Shefound his shirt and put it on, wrapping the material around her. She
walked over to the window and looked out over Lake Michigan, to see the
city lights reflecting off the water.
Never in her wildest dreams had she expected Hank to bring her to a
place like this. He had said he wanted to surprise her and he had.
Turning to look at him lying in bed asleep, she
sighed. She had loved
him more than anything once. Maybe she could be again. Her head tried
to tell her that Jeff had just been a fling, a mistake, something to
pass the time while Hank was away. But her heart kept telling her
something else. It had been hard to do, but she had made her choice and
she had chosen Hank.
She turned back towards the window and rested her forehead on the cool
glass. If she couldn't be with the one she loved, she would love the
one she was with.
